The Coming Crisis; the Cost of Illegal Immigration

Oliver North is a columnist at the Freedom Alliance, and has rarely, if ever, missed on one of his posts. This one is, IMO, one of his most important.

Bush administration officials and lawmakers, preoccupied with leak and lobbying investigations, the Alito confirmation hearings, a mining disaster and the war in Iraq seem oblivious to what is happening south of the Rio Grande. Absent the urgent attention of some astute officials in our nation’s capital, the Latin American pressure cooker won’t just boil over – it will explode. Most Americans see the burgeoning crisis to our south as simply a problem of illegal immigration. Reflecting that sentiment, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to strengthen border enforcement before going home for Christmas. This week, most Latin American diplomats lined up to condemn the proposal. Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez called it “stupid and underhanded.” Few in Washington paid any attention. In fact, the flow of illegals across our southern border will only get worse if Washington continues to ignore the tell-tale warnings coming from the region. The most recent “leading indicators” of political turmoil:

See my previous February post on this topic. This subject, illegal immigration, is going to blow up, and Washington is only seeing a little bit of it, out of the corner of their eyes. More Americans are concerned about this than their representatives, and that can be disasterous.

Violence along the border is increasing, and allegations of intrusions by Mexican Soldiers, are becoming more frequent, as well as allegations that the Mexican Army is aiding drug runners in their smuggling of illegal substances into the nation. This is more than likely simply the tip of an iceberg of difficulties we are having with Mexico.

Mexico’s President, Vicente Fox, is flirting with fire, here. one has to think that he is making the same mistake other tyrants have made, underestimating what the United States will do in the face of provocation. Historically, the U.S. has been slow to anger, but when we do take action, we do so overwhelmingly. Mexico take notice! This will not go on for much longer.

The Cost of Illegal Immigration

 From Freedom Alliance:

Estimates have put the cost of immigration at more than $60 billion in 2000 alone. In response to those who maintain immigrants are paying their share of taxes, it should be noted this mammoth figure represents costs after immigrants’ tax contributions are factored in.

Indeed, legal immigrants are more expensive; they account for $35 billion of that figure. And these repetitive costs come from many sources – which grow more expensive every year as inflation rises (partly because American systems and programs are being abused by illegal aliens; it’s a vicious circle, to some extent). “As high as the cost is now, the rising tide of immigration will lift it even higher in years to come. By the end of 2002, the annual net cost of immigration will have risen $66 billion,” said FAIR (a separate study by Dr. Donald Huddle, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Rice University, found that immigrants cost American taxpayers $69 billion in 1997 alone, over and above the taxes they paid).

In addition, about two-thirds of illegal aliens lack even a high school diploma. Traditionally low education levels translates into low incomes and, hence, lower tax payments. This phenomenon also adds to the overall negative fiscal impact illegals have on the U.S. economy.

Worse, there is no reason to expect future immigrants – most of who are from Mexico – will not be as poverty-stricken as the millions who have come before them. Even immigrants who are granted legal status continue to cost the nation money; as legal residents they qualify for more tax-funded benefits while still only making modest tax contributions. In fact, one study shows, though tax receipts from legalized migrants would increase 77 percent, average costs would increase 118 percent. It also says that, on average, illegal households pay more than $4,200 a year in all forms of federal taxes. Unfortunately, they impose costs of $6,950 per household.
